Such hunting guns were known as arquebuses. Not only is this example of interesting construction, but its decoration is particularly rich and varied. The stock and butt are set with plaques of carved and gilded horn and then covered with fine carving and gilding. Amongst the many centres for the production of arms and armour in 16th- and 17th-century Germany, Munich specialized in the making of firearms. Hermann Fischer was one of the most famous of Munich masters.
